I make my excuses to the guy I’ve been talking to and restlessly shake his hand. My mind has already left him and my body wants to follow. Then I make my way towards Dora. She invited me here. Was she aware of this? Was this some kind of fucked-up set-up? On my way over, I accidentally crash into a chair, knocking it over. I apologise to the family seated there. As I continue on my way, Dora’s daughter, the owner of the play centre, eyes me warily. Well, she certainly knows. She stalks towards me, intercepts me.
‘You need to be gentle with Beth. She’s not had it easy.’
I snigger. Is she for real? My laugh isn’t quiet, so her parents turn around. They turn back to each other. I observe their mouths moving. Words. Wondering what’s happening.
I undo the first button on my shirt, feeling like I’m being strangled. Perhaps I need air? ‘I find out I have a son. I’ve missed out on three years of his life and you say she’s not had it easy.’
‘She had her reasons. Just give her time to explain. That’s all I’m asking.’
‘Well, thanks for your concern for your lying, dishonest friend. I’m seeing her later. We’ll discover what those reasons were. If I don’t like what I hear, I’ll be using my solicitor.’
Dora comes and stands alongside her daughter. She places an arm on her daughter’s shoulder. ‘What’s going on, Cam? Who needs a solicitor?’
‘Mum. It’s complicated. Leo is Trey’s father.’
‘Yeah, I worked that one out when I saw Beth go whiter than my legs are in December.’ She crosses her arms and fixes me with a stare. ‘Beth’s like a niece to me. She’s raised your son magnificently. Now yes, she’s not told you about your son for whatever reason, but it must be a good one because she’s an amazing woman. I hear you threaten her with a solicitor again and I’ll swing one of your own golf clubs at your kneecaps. Do you understand me?’
I step back in shock. The lovely woman who got me to come here has been replaced by a Rottweiler. I swear there’s foam in her mouth.

Slowly raising his head from within his hands, the man in front of Rebecca eventually looked up at her. Blood was pouring from a gash across his eye, and he seemed somewhat dazed. Had this been any ordinary day, she may have noticed his dazzling blue eyes as they stared right at her. She may have checked out his ring finger in the hope that there was no sign of a ring, or that obvious white band you get if you have recently worn one. She may even have struck up a conversation with him, tried to find out more, see if he was interested in her. But this wasn't an ordinary day.

Looking around she shouted to the other guy, who was sitting just a little further back, "Hey are you ok? Is there anyone else in the van?"

No reply came, so she beckoned to some of the bystanders to come and help. They held back at first, then ran over.

"See if anyone has a first aid kit, or something you can use to stem the bleeding from this guy's head," Rebecca instructed the first man who had come to help, "I'm going to check on the other guy, see if I can get any sense out of him. Check this guy for any other injuries and as soon as he can stand get him the hell away from the van, just in case anything does go up."

She ran back to the other man who also had his head in his hands. As she knelt in front of him he quickly raised his head. He then looked to his colleague before turning back.

"Is Richie okay?" he asked.

"Richie? Is that your colleague over there?" Rebecca replied.

"Of course it bloody is, who else would it be?" said the man, his voice raised and angry.



About The Author



I am a Scottish lass born and bred, grew up in Ayrshire now live in Bonnybridge. An avid reader as a child, my love of books has grown with me. I am a blogger, although I am currently taking an extended break, a reviewer and a beta reader. I am a huge supporter of indie authors, and still can't quite believe I'm about to join such an amazing group of people.

I work full time as a nanny in Edinburgh. To break the monotony of rush hour traffic I occasionally find myself daydreaming on my way home. It was during one of these journeys that the idea for Hearts in Danger came to me. Knowing I had to get the story out of my head I took part in Nanowrimo 2015. By the end of the month I had not only written over 50,000 words, I had surprised myself by sticking to it every single day.

What happens next, who knows? Wherever this journey takes me, though, I will be forever grateful for the help and support I have had along the way from family, friends, bloggers, reviewers and authors alike.

As much as it was slipping away from me and his presence were causing my body to react in the way I didn’t want, I couldn’t let my guard down. I had to fight, if I’ve learnt anything from my history with men it’s not to let them walk all over you. Lifting my head and look directly into his hazel eyes. “My first rule of business, never get involved with employees.”
“I don’t work here, Amelia, I just own the buil-”
“You have an office with your name on the door, you work here.” His powerful eyes suddenly begin to make me uncomfortable, I slide passed him needing space. “My second rule. Never lie, to which you’ve failed already. You could have prevented that by telling me straight.”
He sighs and cocks a brow, clearly enjoying every second of my flustered state. “And is there a third in this rule game of yours?”
“Yeah-” I stride over and open the door, raising arm length to hold it while my other hand places my hip “-with all due respect, Mr Matthews, this maybe your building but this is still my office. Close the door on your way out.”
Ok, so that’s technically not a rule.
He takes two strides towards the door and I’m feeling a little triumphant that I’ve won this battle, only it’s short lived when he slams it shut and thrusts me against it, our lips a breath apart as he locks his eyes on mine, placing his arms either side of my head to cage me in. My body stiffens instantly. His voice low, “Do you have any idea how sexy you are when flustered? The way your neck turns every shade of pink and your eyes dart everywhere.”
“It’s people like you that make me flustered.”
His brows furrow as his eyes search over my face. “Do I intimidate you, Amelia?”
“What do you want from me?” I whisper in a rush.
He studies me for a few seconds before he speaks. “I have rules too. First, I never lie. Giving you wrong information about me and not telling you the whole truth are two completely different things altogether. And second, I go out with who I want regardless of who they are or where they work. You intrigue me, Amelia, there’s something about you I want.”

About The Author



Kate has lived in South West England her entire life just on the edge of Dartmoor where the moorland goes on for days. It's beautiful, breathtaking and occasionally rather wet.

Growing up as a kid, writing was never her course of direction as she disliked everything about it due to being dyslexic. However, overtime she got back into reading/writing and fell in love with adult romances.
Then one day two characters etched their way into her mind and didn't show any signs of leaving - the rest is history.
