Author Spotlight: Heather Dahlgren

Interview:

1.      When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Even though I wrote in high school, it wasn’t until college that I realized that one day I would love to write a book.

2.      How long does it take you to write a book?

It all depends on the book.  I’ve written some in 2 weeks and others take months.

3.      What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

When I am writing, which is always, my work schedule consists of very little sleep while I spend countless hours in front of the computer.

4.      What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Maybe not interesting, but I can’t write if I have music on, but I need to have the TV on.

5.      Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

The ideas usually just pop in my head.  Sometimes it will be a photo I saw or a song I heard, but mostly they just pop into my head.  Information I get off of google.  If anyone ever looked at my search they’d question me for sure.

6.      When did you write your first book and how old were you?

I wrote my first published book almost two years ago when I was 35.  I have an unfinished book that was truly my first that I started four years ago.

7.      What do you like to do when you're not writing?

When I’m not writing I love being with my family.  Doesn’t matter what we are doing as long as we are together.

8.      What does your family think of your writing?

My family is very supportive of my writing.

9.      What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

One of the most surprising things I’ve learned is that the characters truly takeover.  You really have no say when they takeover
.

10.    How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I’ve completed 8 books, 6 of which are published right now.  Yikes, I don’t think I can pick a favorite.  I love them all for different reasons.

11.    Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they?

I think to become a better writing you need to keep writing and reading.  Always keeps you thinking.

12.    Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

Hearing from my readers is the best feeling in the world.  I adore when I get messages from them.  They will tell me they loved a book, loved the characters, like my writing style or simply say they are a fan.  I kid you not, best feeling ever.

13.    Do you like to create books for adults?

I love to create books for adults.  Giving adults an escape from real life for a while is what it is all about.

14.    What do you think makes a good story?

That’s a tough question.  Some stories that I didn’t like I’d like I love and some I thought I’d loved I didn’t like.  I don’t think I can say what makes a good story, it’s different for each story, I believe.

15.    As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

As a child I wanted to be an English teacher.
