Shelton Cole SC Photo
Interview:
1. How did you decide that you wanted to be a photographer?
I grew up with a camera in my hand, worked in high school as the newspaper and yearbook photographer, and worked part-time as a photo technician for a photography studio. Through the years and advances in technology, I remained old school and used film until 1998 when I took the digital plunge. While all this was going on, photography was just a hobby and a means of a creative outlet while I was busy with my career. At my last divorce in 2013, I picked it up again to make friends and have a tax write off for my business. I was wildly enthusiastic as I began to learn the business side while I fulfilled the creative side of my passion.
2. What is your favorite thing to take pictures of?
I would have to say people now. In the past I was mostly a landscape photographer but I wanted to perfect the genre of Art Nude going back to my black and white roots. Shooting budding and professional models has been so much fun that each experience with a new model has become a cherished memory.
3. What is the craziest or weirdest thing that has happened to you on a shoot?
I would have to say it was at “Nudes in Nature Photographers and Artist Retreat” (NINPAR) in Maryland. I had shot nudes before but when we sat down to breakfast and a beautiful, unclothed model, sat with us to eat, I have to say that was the very first time I had bacon and eggs with breasts.
4. When you started taking pictures did you think they would end up as book covers?
No, I had no idea. Late in 2013, I was approached by several Male models to shoot them for their portfolio. Shortly after that, I was friended by an author who purchased my first photo for the back of her cover. I was thrilled and we are good friends to this day.
5. How long did it take before someone said I want that picture for my cover?
I think it was about 3 months after I started shooting Males and Couples.
6. How many book covers are the pictures that you have taken on?
Last count was 25 with 6 unpublished coming out this year
7. What is your favorite part about being a photographer?
Creating something beautiful and expressing my artistic and creative side
8. Do you read the books that your pictures are on?
I have read some and have enjoyed reading selections from all of them. I love Sci-Fi and Fantasy and would love to do a cover and read some of that genre
9. How old were you when you started taking photos?
I was 12 when I picked up my first camera.
10. What do you like to do in your down time?
Spend time with my family and my fiancé Melanie Pilcher and her son Jace. I also love golf, shooting and designing covers.
11. What does your family think of your photography?
My family really loves what I do but most of my family and friends are on another profile because of the art nude that I have done and the provocative images I create with men and women for covers. I have a separate persona that I do not want to expose others to unless they are in the industry. I am a license psychologist and have a separate life that I need to protect.
12. Do you have a favorite picture out of all the ones that you have taken? If yes can we see it?
Well yes, and one for each genre. But, for the book cover genre it would have to be one of my good friend Lance Jones and Brittany Love that made the cover of Chelle Bliss’ book

13. Do you have any suggestions to help someone to become a photographer? If so, what are they?
Follow your passion and shoot for yourself. Listen to others, learn from your favorite photogs, and do what makes you happy. Photography is my life, not how I make a living. When it stops fulfilling my creative side and stops being fun, I will stop because the work that you HAVE to do loses that passion that I think photography as an art is all about.
14. Do you hear from your fans much? What kinds of things do they say?
I have some wonderful fans and for the life of me, I don’t understand why they like my work so much. I think among the photographers out there that I admire and shoot covers, I am the least talented. They like my composition and creative use of light mostly.
15. As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
A doctor. I ended up being a theologian and psychologist, so in many ways I fulfilled that in helping people spiritually and mentally. As a photographer, I hope I am bringing joy and excitement to people’s souls.
